The Mighty Rhino

Ahh the might Rhino! Always high on the list for any visitor on Safari. They are truly Gigantic animals even from a safe distance.

Rhinos have have poor eyesight. However, they have a keen sense of smell and hearing, which they use to navigate their environment and find food. They are herbivores, and their diet consists of grasses, leaves, and fruit, but just because you aren't on the menu, doesn't mean they want to be friends! And you certainly don't want to get on the wrong side of them!

Sadly, the rhino is an endangered species, due to poaching and habitat loss. Poachers kill rhinos for their horns, which are believed to have medicinal properties in traditional Chinese medicine. This one photographed here has no horn. In an attempt to protect rhinos, some game parks are removing their horns and thus removing their attractiveness to poachers.

Habitat loss is another major threat to rhinos, as they need large areas of land to roam and graze.

Despite the challenges it faces, the rhino is a resilient creature. With the help of conservation efforts, the rhino population is slowly recovering. There are now over 15,000 rhinos in South Africa, and the number is expected to continue to grow in the coming years.
