Table Mountain
Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain that rises 1,086 meters (3,563 feet) above the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is one of the most iconic landmarks in the country, and its distinctive shape has made it a popular tourist destination for centuries.
The mountain is made up of sandstone and shale, and its flat top is the result of millions of years of erosion. The summit plateau is home to a variety of plants and animals, including fynbos, a unique type of vegetation that is found only in the Cape Floral Region.
One of the most fascinating things about Table Mountain is the "tablecloth" of clouds that often covers its summit. These clouds are formed when the prevailing southeasterly wind blows up the mountain's slopes, where they cool and condense.
The tablecloth can be a spectacular sight, and it is said to be the result of a smoking contest between the Devil and a local pirate called Van Hunks.
Table Mountain is also home to the world's oldest surviving cableway. The cableway was built in 1929 and has been transporting visitors to the summit ever since.
